Bangladesh minister announces new terrorism law

“Money laundering and anti-terrorism ordinances of the caretaker government will be passed into laws. There is no compulsion of getting the 54 ordinances passed into law in this session,” ‘Law Minister’ Shafiq Ahmed said.

Anyone financing or renting out accommodation to people linked with religious militancy or terrorism will be tried for abetment, according to Ahmed.

“Providing militants with either assistance – be it accommodation or finance – are offences of similar gravity. The landlords are responsible for what their tenants should be doing in their places,” Law Minister Shafique Ahmed said Tuesday.

Facing a grim battle against Islamist militancy and terrorism, Bangladesh is in the process of tightening the law and its administration, while equipping the police and Rapid Action Battalion, an elite paramilitary force.

“Once the Anti-Terrorism Bill is enacted by the parliament as a law, the landlords will need to stand trial in case there occurs any untoward incident, irrespective of any lease agreement or the absence of it,” according to the Minister.
