U.S. Representative addresses the UN Counterterrorism Committees

On 11 May Ambassador Susan E. Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, made some remarks at an Open Security Council Session on UN Counterterrorism Committees. Rice confirmed that the US intends working with all UN members to “disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al-Qaeda and its extremist allies”.

In view of this goal, the US “is committed to more sustained and strategic counterterrorism engagement with the wider UN membership”.

Rice highlighted three central principles underpinning the US approach to UN counterterrorism action: (i) inclusivity and transparency of all the Council’s counterterrorims-related committees; (ii) implementation of the Council’s counterterrorism framework; relevance of the counterterrorism work in the Council within national and regional efforts to deal with the terrorist threat.

Rice concluded approving the work done by the UN Counterterrorism committees and the direction they are following.
