UK: UN expert criticises deportations and profiling in counter-terrorism

On 31 May, the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, Jorge Bustamante, presented the report of his visit to the United Kingdom on 22 to 26 June 2009.

The Special Rapporteur expressed concern at the invocation of the grounds of “national security” and the “terrorism threat” to deprive non-nationals legally married to British nationals of the right to stay in the territory of the United Kingdom.

He also expressed concern over the use of profiling and recommended that the Government take all necessary measures to prohibit in law and practice the use of profiles that reflect unexamined generalizations, such as profiling based on ethnic or national origin or religion.
