Security Council Votes to Continue Military Effort in Afghanistan

The Security Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to extend for a year the United Nations’ authorization for the NATO-led military force in Afghanistan, expressing concern about the increase in terrorist activities by the Taliban, Al Qaeda  and other extremist groups. The resolution adopted by the Security Council emphasized the need for sustained efforts by the 143,000-member force, known as the International Security Assistance Force, to assist the Afghan government in improving security and confronting threats by militants.
