New figures on the European Arrest Warrant

New figures released by the European Council, show that 24 of the 27 EU Member States issued 14,789 European Arrest Warrants (EAW) in 2009 alone. The figures also show that the UK issued 220 EAWs in 2009, compared to 2,433 sent by Germany and 4,844 issued by Poland. Responding to the EAWs sent to the UK, the British police carried out 863 arrests, which led to the eventual extradition of 628 people.
